Our Story
Prairie Rise Farm is a small, family-run operation dedicated to breeding and raising purebred, registered KuneKune pigs. We fell in love with this incredible heritage breed for their gentle temperament, manageable size, and grazing ability — and we haven’t looked back since.
Why KuneKunes?
KuneKune pigs are one of the friendliest and most manageable pig breeds in the world. Originally from New Zealand, they’re true grazing pigs that thrive on pasture, making them ideal for small farms and homesteads. They’re known for their docile personalities, colorful coats, and the adorable wattles (called “piri piri”) that hang from their lower jaw. Learn more on our KuneKune Breed Info page.
Our Breeding Program
We are proud members of the American KuneKune Pig Society (AKKPS). Every pig in our program is AKKPS registered with DNA-verified parentage and a documented pedigree. We breed to the AKKPS Breed Standard, selecting for:
- Correct conformation — broad, dished heads; level backs; well-rounded hams; straight, sturdy legs
- Sound temperament — our pigs are handled daily and well-socialized from birth
- Genetic diversity — we carefully track bloodlines and pedigrees to maintain healthy, diverse genetics
- Proper wattles, coat, and teat counts — attention to all aspects of the breed standard
- Responsible placement — we work with every buyer to ensure a good fit
